I have this feeling sometimes that Google's "Don't Be Evil" motto is actually a huge, elaborate plot.
That by not being evil and by turning out all these great gadgets that people want to use, Google is infiltrating our lives and will eventually take over.
Think about it. Why would you ever use Yahoo or Hotmail again when Gmail is so much cleaner? Google Desktop indexes everything on your computer. Mapquest is still more useful than Google Maps for actually finding directions, but with satellite view on Maps or with Google Earth you can actually see the streets and houses (most places; they really need better footage for others). Google Talk doesn't have all the features of Yahoo, MSN, or AIM, but it's clean, it's brand new, and it doesn't use up all your computer's power. Google Calendar is so much easier and cleaner to use than Outlook or anything else out there, and it loads up instantly and dynamically because it's on the internet and it's Google. Google Search returns useful results without annoying ads.
And they come out with new things and update their current projects every couple of weeks. Half of these things are still only in beta--think about when they come out for real.
One day a message will show up on everyone's computer that just says "Thank you for letting us have your life" and we'll all be Google zombies.
The irony of this theory is, or perhaps its true test, is that I was explaining this to my roommate as I downloaded Google Desktop.
Also, fuck Google Desktop. It scrolls through your photos so I come home to a Lindsay slideshow, because those are all the fucking pictures I have.
